Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy is a spin-off directed by Yuen Woo-Ping and came out in Hong Kong a few days before Christmas 2018. In this, Zhang Jin reprises his role as Cheung Tin Chi from Ip Man 3 and the film follows his life after his defeat at the hands of Ip Man. He seeks redemption by squaring off against local gangsters, naturally. With cameos from Michelle Yeoh and Tony Jaa, and Dave Bautista as the bad guy, this looks like it’ll be a treat for martial arts fans.
On the other hand, Zhilei Zhang hails from China, and goes by the nickname “Big Bang”. Zhang, as opposed to his young opponent, Hrgovic, is 39 years old and will fight as a southpaw. So far, Zhang has had 25 pro fights and a total of 72 rounds to speak of. Zhilei Zhang’s professional record comprises 24 wins, 0 losses, and only 1 draw. In addition, 19, that is to say, 76% of his victories come by the way of a knockout. Zhang has a similar height of 6′ 6 and more or less possesses the same reach as Hrgovic. Zhang made his debut in 2015, and in April of this year, he had his last fight. In his last fight, Zhang’s opponent was Scott Alexander, and the former won by a knockout in the very first round of the fight.
Repeated heavy shots from Zhang caused swelling above Joyce’s right eye causing the fight to be stopped following an inspection by ringside doctor after the 6th round, giving Zhang a technical knockout victory.
The legal action renewed claims of cultural appropriation but also saw some Māori tā moko artists defend Whitmill. Legal scholars have highlighted how the case juxtaposes Māori and Anglo-American attitudes on ownership of images. Despite never making it to trial, the case has been widely discussed in the context of the copyrightability of tattoos, a matter which has never been fully resolved in the United States.
The early undercard is already underway site here in London and the first fight saw Tommy Fletcher vs Alberto Tapia in a heavyweight bout which saw Tapia floored in the twice in the first round, once in the second, and once in the third before he was taking such punishment in the fourth that his corner threw in the towel.
Eye-popping as this opening scene might be, the fight is a red herring: Neither VFX nor Lee (who, in real life, had already left for the U.S. by 1959) has a prominent presence in Ip Man 3. Even more than in Sammo Hung’s action choreography in the previous two films, the physical combats here — Ip taking on dozens of opponents in an incredibly high-octane sequence in a shipyard, or just a single adversary in a single room — take place mostly with feet on the ground and fists cracking bones. This earthly approach echoes Ip’s quotidian life: Again, Yen delivers a suitably understated turn as the mild-mannered master, mingling with the masses and seeking nothing more than an ordinary life with his martial-arts school and his family.
Most recently, Yen starred in Mulan as Commander Tung and was announced to be included in Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 4 with Keanu Reeves. He came from a martial arts lineage, as he started learning from a young age from his mother, who is a famed tai chi master. Ever since accepting roles in mainstream Hollywood movies, he has seen it as an opportunity to display positive, non-stereotypical Chinese representation.
Boxing legend Mike Tyson is one of the few boxers who has had success in creative endeavors outside the ring. The former heavyweight champion has found a lot of success in acting making his Hollywood debut with a cameo appearance in ‘The Hangover’. Moreover, he has continued to find success in Hollywood, often playing exaggerated versions of himself.
While he would not comment on his case directly, he explained that one could think of the process as a collaboration between the tattooer and the tattooed, “owned by both people, based on the trust that is used to create it.”
Zhang considered turning professional at 25 years of age after the 2008 Olympics, but could not until 2014. Dino Duva and Don King were the first promoters to approach Zhang. In August 2009, Duva and King arranged for Zhang to train at the Poconos. In September 2010, Duva arranged for Zhang to train in the Poconos to prepare him for the 2010 Asian Games. The highlight of that training were 11 bouts between the Chinese and American national boxing teams in Manhattan promoted as “Empires Collide”, which Zhang defeated Danny Kelly Jr 16:8 in the main fight. Zhang dominated in all domestic amateur heavyweight competitions from 2005 until 2013. He was finally released by the Henan Provincial Combat and Weightlifting Center after he competed in the 2012 Olympics and won the gold medal for 2013 National Games of China.
